Laurence learns Spanish in Quito homestay… an unexpected surprise!

On a three month trip to Ecuador, travel bloggers Laurence and Vera stayed with one of our hosts for a few nights for their first ever experience of a homestay. The host, Cecilia (and her dog Camila), in the La Floresta neighbourhood of Quito made it an experience they’ll never forget!

“We arrived in Quito at the bus station and took a taxi to Cecilia’s house. She came down from her apartment on the third floor, opened the door and welcomed us warmly. We all went upstairs and she showed us around. It was then that we realised that Cecilia only spoke Spanish... Oh...”

Despite the language barrier, they loved their homestay experience, chatting about everything from politics to family life, as well as doing some sightseeing in Quito.

“I’m not saying that we conversed very elegantly, but it was an amazing experience,” says Laurence. Read the full story about their amazing homestay experience in Quito and how they navigated their way through it with the help and hospitality of their host Cecilia in their blog post No Hablo Espangnol: A Homestay Experience.
