I really enjoyed staying at Maria's place. The 3 important items for any traveler in any accommodation are: a solid bed, hot shower with good water pressure, and closeness to center of action. And the place that Maria provided had all these elements. It is a a clean outhouse, with separate entrance, so it is independent of Maria's family living space.
The breakfasts are a disappointment for someone coming from US (basically just coffee and some sweets) but so is the breakfast in most of Italy.
Maria doesn't speak much English (and I am sad to admit I don't speak any Italian.) So there was not much of a cultural exchange, and most of my primitive communication was done through her young sons.
I recommend Maria's place to anyone looking for a good deal, though.

Bad communication and confusion about arrival. Great location but a real pain on a hot day with lots of stairs and luggage to haul up. Light breakfast was a non event- Maria did try on the first day..but serving up cold milk with a dash of old coffee and a slab of cake is not breakfast. They didn't even bother after that so I had to find a cafe for a coffee in the morning which was really was awful. The attic room is hot and dangerous as there is no head room and the bed was uncomfortable and the pillow even worse. They are nice people but have no idea how to provide comfortable accommodation. ..you get way less than you pay for...Sorrento is beautiful and the station and facilities are close by.

This is my first time staying with a family abroad and i loved every minute of it. A very easy going and loving family. I loved Dad, Mom Joseph, Fernando and little Miriam.

Its a shame i couldn't stay more, as i sincerely felt i'm part of the family. I highly recommend their stay ideally for solo travelers or two. If your the kind of guy who loves the company, this is a really good family that will help you when in need and very flexible about house roles and super friendly toward foreigners.

Their house is very close to down town where touristic action is happening. Sorrento area is an lovely place to live at compared to the near by costal areas. Its spacious and big enough to with flat land escape enabling easy exploration activity. Meaning you won't do all that kind of climbing and descending compared to other near by costal areas. showing mercy to your knees which your going to beg for in a couple of days when the land escape is like climbing mountains >_

Maria, Franco and the kids were very approachable and helpful with anything that I required. As I spoke no Italian, it made it challenging to communicate, however manageable. The location was extremely convenient to commute around Sorrento, warf and train/bus station. The room was comfortable but difficult to sleep from the heat. Overall, they made me feel welcome and safe which makes them a great homestay family.

We enjoyed our stay with Maria and her family except we didn't know about the 90 stairs to reach the top of the house where our room was. Being not so young any more they were a bit of a challenge. The garden apartment is where we were originally booked for - or so I understood. The family were very helpful carrying our suitcases up stairs [or we would never have made it!] and Maria took us to see the Easter procession. Jackie Bennet and Margaret Cook
