Ayuntamiento is a charming restored Colonial-Californian home in the middle of the very sought after and historical neighborhood of Mexico City: Coyoacan. It is offering a most dedicated service to all our guests in a clean, organized and secure ambiance. The room has its own bathroom, quality bedding and linens and each is decorated with attention to the colors and textures of Mexican handicraft. The property is spacious and has terraces, garden, patio, a large living room and an impressive open plan kitchen with dining area.

Coyoacan is a place to be immediately immersed in culture, color and tradition. By simply walking through its plazas and small cobbled streets you step back in time. The location could not be better with its museums, squares, churches, markets and that special ambience of old colonial grandeur and indigenous charm that Coyoacan proudly presents. With the advantage of our close metro station you can get to the centre of Mexico City and experience all the wonders of the historic quarters, the museum areas, the vast shopping and later return back to the peaceful cobbled streets of good old Coyoacan. It is said that people who live in Coyoacan never wish to leave. I guess our dear Frida Kahlo could not agree more.
Ours is a Ballet family. We hold a ballet studio at the rear of the house and every afternoon you will hear piano music and see our dancers in action.

About the Area

Coyoacan was founded by the Toltecs, between X and XII centuries dc. It was established as the capital of the New Spain by Hernan Cortez, right after the conquest and fall of the old Tenochtitlàn.
Coyoacan has been home to many important actors, painters, writers and sculptors such as: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Novo, Leon Trotzky, Octavio Paz, Emilio “El Indio” Fernandez and many illustrious politicians, historic characters and historians.
Living in Coyoacan is such a joy. You will notice that it is quite a concoction of old and new and always sprinkled with a bit of culture. Designer boutiques right next to indigenous handicraft street-stalls, haunted cobbled streets right next to a trendy jazz café or quite posh restaurants beside to the many easy going street performers.
This house was built in 1927 in what is called here in Mexico as Californian-Colonial style. It was originally built by Don Jeronimo Rodriguez, a Spanish expat that was into big movie productions of the golden era of Mexican Cinema. It is said, celebrities of the time such as: Mario Moreno “Cantinflas” and Maria Felix used to visit this house. The house was also a shelter to many Cubans that fled their island and stopped in Mexico City before heading to the United States in the late fifties and early sixties. Many Cubans recall the address of Ayuntamiento 70 as the “House of Liberty”. It is when they finally arrived to this house that they knew they were safe and ready for the journey ahead. Later on, it was owned by renowned novelist and screenwriter Rafael Solana and eventually I bought it from his niece.
I guess this house has always had an artistic touch, and since I am a ballet teacher and choreographer, the need to have a studio at the back of the house was imperative and that is why Ayuntamiento 70 is also host to Ballet Club Mexico. This small dance studio holds ballet classes for children and youth a few days of the week, along with a few extra dance classes such as Indian Dance. It is vital to mention that the studio is independent from main house and guests will notice the little ballerinas trotting about and the piano music that echoes from 4:00 to 8:30 pm.
