About the Homestay
Amazing location with 2 train stations only 5 & 10 mins on foot, right between Osaka and Kyoto (20-30 mins train ride to each downtown respectively). Free travel with JR Pass to Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe and the rest of Japan. If you stay near non-JR stations, you have to buy seprate tickets, so it's best to be close to a JR station. Our house offers that. Those without JR pass can use a prviate railway (5 mins from our house) at a cheaper price to Osaka, Kyoto & Kobe ($2.5-4). Public transport is so convenient that we have never owned a car here (also neither of us can drive :)).
We're a bilingual family (English/Japanese), and we love learning different languages, so we love meeting people from all over the world. Our kids are 6 and 11. We always enjoy helping our guests with recommendations, direction and other issues they may face in Japan. My husband is a photographer/guide in Kyoto and loves literature & languages. My son loves PC games :(. My daugher loves painting and colors. I love food, slow life, cosy family time and nature.
Our house is modern, large (about 200 sq. metre / 2100 sq. feet.) & green (runs on solar energy) with a large living, dining room.
The neighbourhood has many traditional style houses, narrow streets, a 1300 year old temple and a shrine. A quiet place to stay and enjoy local life, but Kyoto and Osaka only a few minutes away.
I also hold cooking classes at home (making sushi & tempura), tea ceremony, calligraphy in kimono as part of Airbnb experiences, which you can join at extra fee (at a lower price than non-homestaying guests).
We do not provide dinner, but we offer a light breakfast of toast and coffee.

Matt and Akiko are friendly hosts who both speak English. When not out sight-seeing, we felt comfortable resting at home, sometimes talking about cultural differences, places to visit or playing with their children. We would happily visit again.
Akiko, Matt and their family were soo lovely. They made us feel comfortable and very welcomed. They live in a great location and we were very sad we had to leave as we wish we had more time there. They gave us excellent suggestions on things to see and do and helped us with everything we needed. We hope to stay again and welcome them to stay with us f they ever come to Australia.

Akiko and her family were absolutely the best! Their house is very roomy and they are very welcoming and accommodating. It was also incredibly refreshing to converse with them in English and learn more about Japanese culture without the language barrier. I sincerely appreciate their hospitality and value the time we spent. Thank you so much Akiko!
Great memories with Akiko, Matt and their family. Friendly hosts who have made us discover their culture and have given precious help for planning our visits. Very welcoming house in a quiet and lovely residential area, easy to find from the train stations. We also enjoyed the cuisine of the cooking class. Best place to explore Kansai from. Thank you for everything, we'll miss you!
Staying 5 nights in Akikos and Matts house was a great experience at my first travel to Japan. Right from the beginning I felt very welcome and in good hands. I enjoyed to spend time with the family and the conversations with them.
The room was very clean and tidy and sleeping on a futon was no problem at all.
The trips Matt and Akiko recommended were fantastic and also the location was perfect with the local and the JR line to Osaka and Kyoto.
I hope I get the chance to stay another time at their house maybe in the next year.
I highly recommend Akiko and Matt as hosts!
Matt, Akiko and the family were extremely welcoming and friendly. We had lots of space and really enjoyed our stay with them, and only wish we could have stayed longer. The house was conveniently located for us to travel to both Osaka and Kyoto and was well serviced by 2 convenient train lines.
I would certainly recommend staying with the family, particularly as they have so much local knowledge and information to share and were so easy to communicate with. Their gracious hospitality was very much appreciated and we hope to visit again someday! Arigato gozaimasu!
The time with Akiko and her family was a wonderful experience. Since I was traveling alone, I enjoyed it a lot to spend time together with them like playing with the kids or having dinner together. The house is very clean and they will provide everything you need to feel comfortable. The connection to Kyoto and Osaka is very fast and easy, especially if you are travelling with a JR-Pass, for there is a JR station near the house. I also had the chance to participate at one of Akikos cooking workshops, which was very interesting and a lot of fun!
After my day trips it has always been a nice feeling returning home to the family. So I really enjoyed the time there and hope to come back soon :)
Akiko's family it's one of the best things we have found in Japan!! We had a lovely time in their house and with them. They made us feel like we were home. We enjoyed our chats and sharing our life experiences. Our daughter has a great time with Akiko's kids, they are lovely!
The house is very big , you will have anything you need and it's very well located. And they are always please to help you. We well love to get back!!
