About the Area

Centro Habana and is one of the most popular streets. Full of music and colors, your neighbors are the most alive and true representatives of what it is to be Cuban. In just 3 minutes you can reach the Hammel Alley: a triumph of colors and Cuban folklore. In 5 minutes you will reach the Malecon the most famous seashore in the world. In 10 minutes The populated and nocturnally animated Ramp at the foot of the Famous Hotel Habana Libre: the avenue where everyone is at sunset In 15 minutes there is the Capitol, the Central Plaza and the neighborhoods of Old Havana, El Floridita, Obispo Street, Paseo del Prado, Plaza Vieja and all the other well-known places in the old town. In just 20 minutes I was able to get to the Plaza de la Revolucion with the Martì monument. You can reach all these charming places on foot or with one of the typical rickshaw that is found in the same corner of the house. You can also go around in an "almendron" the typical Cuban taxi that cross the near Neptune avenue. If you have your rental car you can park it comfortably in the state parking 50 meters away.

The house itself is beautiful, clean and modern. Air conditioning is great and my bathroom was lovely. Breakfast was served at the time requested with lots of fresh fruit, juice, coffee, eggs etc.
The wi-fi is dependent upon the ETECSA router which is the park nearby and can only be accessed (sometimes and with much difficulty, slowly) from the balcony.
We were given keys to our room but were unable to enter the house without buzzing the doorbell as we had no main door key. Upon arrival we were told that we could buzz at any time of the day and night. We never returned later than 1am which in Cuba with the dancing is early.
At night the door to the living room and the balcony are locked preventing us from going to the balcony (to try to get wi-fi), to the living room or even leaving the apartment to go for a walk (we had access to our room only -- no common spaces, no outdoor space). My friend buzzed at 6.40am because she wanted to go to the balcony and was unable. Told in that moment that with the exception of emergencies we can not buzz before 7am (meaning we can not leave the house or go outside without his permission). This is a house not a prison!!!! The rules in the room stated after 1am we must let him know if we would be late but there no rules about the morning.
While I had water for my entire stay my friend (in the room with the bathtub) had water only one of four days (we were given a 6 CUC discount for the entire stay). Thankfully we had booked two rooms so my friend used my bathroom.
Unfortunately I would not recommend this house as we had no freedom of movement (he even called to remind us we had a dinner reservation and would we arrive at the restaurant in time). A home stay can not be dependent upon entering and leaving with the owner's permission. In a rental house/room people are always free to come and go as they please. The attitude and set up of the owner needs to change. The house is structured in a way that guests can not really use the common spaces. This is not a home stay. It's a room stay that seems like a convent room with no freedom to leave and return without his permission -- questions upon returning home, comments etc. He is always there controlling what we are doing, how we are doing it, always giving too many unasked suggestions.

    Host reply
Homestay Host Family Susana in ,

We are baffled by Caitlin's comments that we do not hesitate to define a mixture of mystifications and lies.
Caitlin and her friend Paola have since submerged us of requests via e-mail (which we have kept as evidence) to get suggestions for restaurants, clubs and so on. They urged us to reserve for them restaurants and places that were difficult to reserve, something we did in our name, thanks to the esteem that all Havana reserves for our seriousness. On their arrival, under the pretext that they had not changed money at the airport, not only did they not pay, as Homestay provides, the reservation, but they forced us to pay even the taxi, we also changed for them money the same night so they could go and have dinner. The payment of the amount due to us took place only 2 days later and following various requests.
Defining our home as a prison is at least absurd and offensive. Our guests have the maximum freedom to enter and exit at any time of day or night without having to give any justification, finding our staff and ourselves available for any and every need 24 hours a day. Being our home for guests with the setting of a hotel and not an apartment for the exclusive use of a single guest, it is necessary, to protect the rest of others, to limit access to the central hall between 24 and 7 am, even if, as can read in the regulations in the rooms, in the site and described aloud on arrival of guests, it is always possible to agree times of access verses (we have guests who go jogging every morning at 6 am without any problem and air flights that require to leave the Guest House at 3 in the morning). Over all the doors of the hall give outward and for safety it is necessary to close them during the night. We only ask our guests to inform us in advance of their time requirements in order to guarantee a prompt service in respect of the rest of others, which instead was not received by Paola in particular that he believed to be able to manage schedules and times so unpredictable and variable from moment to moment placing us in serious difficulty even with the breakfast service, reservations for restaurants and taxis forced to wait while practicing a pre-agreed flat rate.
For when the alleged problem of lack of water is a ridiculous lie because of the ease with which the same Caitlin makes it improbable: the rooms are all served by the same water distribution system and so it can not happen that in a room there is water and in another no!
Unsolicited suggestions do not exist! Caitlin and Paola have engaged us with continuous requests for suggestions for restaurants and tours and as our habit we have offered our experience to allow them to make the most of their holiday and to save money on bars, restaurants and transport. We are new to Homestay, but we have long been present on other sites where the comments of a hundred of our guests testify to us. The assistance we give to our guests has always been welcome and requested, but has never influenced the price of the room despite being a service, in the opinion of many who have gratified us of their preference, which is priceless.
We recommend to Caitlin and Paola, for the next time, to reserve in an apartment isolated only for them, so they can manage in total autonomy without disturbing anyone.
