Practicing my Spanish in Lima!

Tell us about your homestay experience.

I enjoyed getting to talk to my host mom! It was fun practicing my Spanish. She let my dad and I watch the Olympics on her TV which was also fun. I loved playing with her little dog Milka! Cooking was also fun. I would recommend staying in a homestay because it’s much less expensive for one, and it’s a great way to get to know the culture!

What did you do in Lima?

I loved the food! Some of my favorite dishes were: causa, ceviche, tiradito, chicha morada, lomo saltado, ricotto de papa, and picarones. I also tried many new fruits: pitahaya, cherrrymoya, maracuya, aguaymanto and many more! And the surfing. I tried it for the first time and LOVED IT. I was surprised by how many things there are to do!

Any tips or advice for other travellers?

Try new things! And talk to locals—some of the most fun I had was practicing my Spanish and trying new things. People here are usually open to chatting and get excited to share about their culture. Visiting Cusco was definitely one of the highlights! We went to Machu Picchu and Rainbow mountain. I took so many pictures!

How was your experience with your host?

Great! She was super nice and caring. Chatting with Lilian was a great way to learn what day to day life in Peru is like. Whenever we had questions about what to do next or what was safe to eat, Lilian helped us a lot. One of the girls staying at her place got really sick and Lilian helped take her to the hospital and helped with her recove Very glad I picked this homestay!
