Homestays perfect fit for solo travel in India

Becky from the United states was in India for a few weeks for work. She stayed in two homestays in Delhi and Mumbai during her few days free time. She chose homestays as she wanted to see the real authentic India and learn more about Indian culture.

Tell us about your homestay experience

Staying in a homestay in India was one of the best decisions I could have made. It was like having someone to watch out for you in a strange place, as well as a friend to talk to when you came home from a busy day of sight-seeing. My hosts in New Delhi were exceptional, as I became good friends with them and was able to enjoy dinner, walks, and shopping with my hosts. They also went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable and cater to all my needs before, after, and during my trip. When I next have the chance to go to India, it will be sure to include time at a homestay.

What did you to while in India

My trip to India was a mix of work and pleasure. I started out in Agra to see the infamous Taj Mahal, followed by a few days in New Delhi that I shared with my homestay hosts. Then I headed to Vadodara for a week to work in my company's office there. This was followed by a weekend in Mumbai where I got to see the ocean and the local sites in that part of India before heading home.

How was your experience with your hosts

My homestay hosts really helped to make my trip special. In New Delhi, my luggage was lost for 4 days and my hosts not only let me do laundry, but they also lent me some clothes to sleep in so I would have everything clean the next day. They were constantly looking out for me, whether it be to offer more amazing food or suggestions on how to spend my day or reaching out to the airport to try to get my luggage back.

My hosts in Mumbai Shashi and Pearl were equally thoughtful, making sure that I could make the most of my very short time there and accommodating my unfortunate traveling hours. Not only were they very kind an helpful when I got in much later than expected, but they gave me excellent ideas about what to spend my one day in Mumbai doing, and how to get from here to there. They are world travellers themselves, so if you stay with Shashi and Pearl make sure to ask them about their adventures and share a few of your own!

All around a fantastic experience.

Any tips or advice for other solo travellers to India?

Spend time with as many local people as you can. They really make the trip special, and can give great tips on what to see, do, or experience. Also don't be afraid to try something new and to bargain for EVERYTHING!
