5 of the best breakfasts in Dublin

If you're planning a visit to the Irish capital, one meal you’ll have to try is a good hearty breakfast – traditional Irish or otherwise.

As with every city around the world, there are certain establishments that are better when it comes to going out for the first meal of the day. So when it comes to Dublin, here are five places worth trying out.

1Cinnamon, 83-87 Main St, Ranelagh, Dublin 6

A ‘breakfast salad’ might sound like an oxymoron, but this café in the trendy south Dublin suburb of Ranelagh serves up just that. Their take on the traditional Irish breakfast comprises of Annascaul black pudding (an artisan black pudding from Co. Kerry in the west of Ireland), bacon lardons and baby potatoes served on mixed leaves. This is then tossed in a house dressing and topped with a poached egg and Parmesan shavings. Dee-lish-shus.

If you are more of a traditionalist when it comes to your breakfasts however, Cinnamon also offers eggs, eggs and more eggs. The pancakes and omlettes on their brunch menu are also particularly good.

2Avoca, Upper floor of Avoca Department Store, Suffolk Street, Dublin

Irish breakfast #2, at Avoca! (Slightly healthier than yesterday's)

Just one of multiple Avoca cafés and food halls located around Ireland (they have branches in Connemara in Co. Galway, along the Ring of Kerry and more), this is the most convenient for anybody visiting Dublin.

Their full breakfast has all the trimmings, but with that extra touch – the eggs are free range and scrambled, the mushrooms are wild, the sausages are jumbo and hand made, the bacon is American and streaky and the tomatoes are plum. Tempted? Me too.

3The House, 4 Main Street, Howth, Co. Dublin

If you read my post on Dublin’s villages you’ll know one of the best places to take refuge from the city centre is Howth on the north side of the city. There are many different reasons to visit this fishing village, food being just one of them. When it comes to breakfast, The House is where I recommend, and here it’s all about choice.

You can choose from pastries, homemade scones, bacon or sausage ‘sambos’ (Irish slang for sandwiches), porridge topped with all sorts of niceties and more. If you’re a fan of sourdough, this place is for you, as this is the type of toast they serve. Planning on visiting Howth for the day? This is the perfect place to start it.

4Kehoe’s, 9 South Anne Street, Dublin 2

This pub, just seconds off Dublin’s flagship shopping strip Grafton Street, is an institution in the Irish capital. James Joyce drank here in the past and featured it in his masterpiece ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’. So why am I listing it as a place for breakfast if it’s a pub? Well, if you want to fit in with the locals, sometimes black pudding isn’t the only black thing people consume at breakfast.

A ‘pint of the black stuff' is also on many a local’s menu in the morning, especially around St. Patrick’s Day. If you want to start the day like some of those locals do, here’s where to go.

5The Corner Note Café, 1 Coliemore Road, Dalkey, Co Dublin

Another village mentioned in my post about where to get away from it all when in Dublin is Dalkey. Located on the south side of the city, this is a picturesque village and the gateway to one of the country’s most breathtaking coastal walks. It’s full of cafés and restaurants, but the Corner Note Café is the standout café for me.

So what should you look out for here? Think award-winning black and white pudding, apple and Dijon mustard sausages and homemade, honey-roasted Granola. And that’s only the beginning…
