Renata in Toronto has been a host on Homestay.com for almost a year now and since signing up, she hasn’t looked back. We spoke to her about what it’s like to be a host why she enjoys hosting so much.
Renata lives in a brightly-lit detached home only ten minutes from the Jane Street subway station, providing excellent transportation links to downtown Toronto and nearby neighbourhoods. A naturally chatty person, the first thing she likes to do once her guests have arrived and settled in is to take them on a walk and show them the local area - the nearby subway station and bus stops, as well as the many parks that dot the city.
Renata has hosted guests from Germany, Canada and China, while she herself is originally from Poland, giving her house and hosting experience a truly international feel. She and her family even hosted their Chinese guest over the Christmas period, making sure he was included in all the family activities and that he got a real taste of the holidays in Ontario.
A keen cook, Renata has breakfast prepared for all her guests and if they wish, she's also happy to prepare more meals for their stay with her. Her spacious kitchen is the focal point of the home where you can enjoy some home cooking while you’re on holiday or settling into your new destination. For guest who arrive in the warmer months, Renata has bikes her guests can borrow to get out and explore the city and lakeside views of Lake Ontario.
Since the video call feature was introduced between hosts and guests on Homestay.com, Renata has said she finds it much easier to communicate with her prospective guests and manage her bookings. By using video chat, she can offer them a virtual tour with her laptop and gets to know them before they arrive to stay with her. A recent guest Katarina from Germany booked to stay with Renata after a series of video calls and both felt the video chat made the booking process a lot smoother.
